One of the most important battles in the conquest:
the battle of hastings
The Normans, led by Duke William of Normandy, met the Anglo-Saxons, who were led by King Harold Godwinsson of England, in battle. The armies were numbered at about 5,000 to 7,000 on each side. At first, it seemed that the Saxons would win, but the tide unexpectedly turned in favor of the Normans. Duke William and his followers won the battle after all of the Saxons who had not already fled were defeated.
The Battle of Hastings was an important victory for the Normans. It was also the fateful battle that led to the destruction of the Anglo-Saxons. Although the casualties were high for the victorious Normans, they were even more disastrous for the Saxons. It took a long time for Duke William to become the king of England, but eventually he was given the crown on Christmas Day, 1066.
